关于非和谐音 (cacophony) 的概念


每次写关于英文的文学概念，都很难找到对应的中文解释。cacophony 在有道词典里被定义成“刺耳的音调；不和谐音[名词属性]” 。也就是说按字面意思，cacophony 是指混杂着刺耳和不和谐的声音的情况。然而，在文学中，该术语指的是使用带有尖锐、刺耳、嘶嘶声和不悦耳的声音（主要是辅音）来达到预期效果的词。那么，caocophony 是不是译为 "非和谐音"，听起来更像文学术语？
非和谐音(cacophony)常见的例子


在日常生活中，非和谐音 (cacophony) 的一个例子是您在繁忙的城市街道或市场中听到的不同声音的融合。你会同时听到车辆的声音、扬声器的广播、音乐和人的交谈声，甚至是狗的吠叫声，非常不和谐。您可以明确地知道这种情况是繁忙的街道或市场的嘈杂声。我们也可以发现在语言中的非和谐音。例如，

“I detest war because cause of war is always trivial.”
(“我讨厌战争，因为战争的原因总是微不足道的。” )

“because cause” 这个短语是不和谐的，因为 because 和 cause，发音相似，但含义不同。通常，这听起来令人不舒服，因为相同的声音在两个不同的词中重复出现。

同样，乐队在调整乐器时发出的声音也是非和谐音的一个例子。

“非和谐音” (Cacophony) 和 “和谐音” (Euphony)

Cacophony 与 Euphony 相对，和谐音 (Euphony) 是使用具有愉悦和谐效果的词语。通常，元音、半元音和鼻辅音（例如 l、m、n、r、y）被认为是悦耳的。另一方面，杂音或非和谐音 (Cacophony) 使用需要爆炸性传递的辅音组合（例如，p、b、d、g、k、ch-、sh- 等）。

在以上的摘录中，我们看到了一堆废话，同时也没有旋律。读完这首诗，小说的主人公爱丽丝给出了她的印象，这清楚地体现了这首诗的目的。她说：
“Somehow it seems to fill my head with ideas—only I don’t exactly know what they are! However, somebody killed something: that’s clear, at any rate.” (中文 “不知怎么了，我的脑子里似乎充满了想法——只是我不完全知道它们是什么！然而，有人杀了一些东西：无论如何，这很明显。”)

示例 #2：哈特·克兰 (Hart Crane) 的诗《桥》(The Bridge)

20世纪美国最重要的诗人之一哈特·克兰 (Hart Crane)（1899年7月21日—1932年4月27日）的《桥》(The Bridge) 也是非和谐音的例子：

“The nasal whine of power whips a new universe…
Where spouting pillars spoor the evening sky,
Under the looming stacks of the gigantic power house
Stars prick the eyes with sharp ammoniac Proverbs,
New verities, new inklings in the velvet hummed
Of dynamos, where hearing’s leash is strummed…
Power’s script, – wound, bobbin-bound, refined –
Is stopped to the slap of belts on booming spools, spurred
Into the bulging bouillon, harnessed jelly of the stars.”

作者在这里通过刻意选择不和谐的单词和短语来表达工业世界的混乱和混乱。

示例 #3: 格列夫游记 (Gulliver’s Travels) 英国政治家小说家 乔纳森·斯威夫特 著
“And being no stranger to the art of war, I have him a description of cannons, culverins, muskets, carabines, pistols, bullets, powder, swords, bayonets, battles, sieges, retreats, attacks, undermines, countermines, bombardments, sea-fights…”
为了描写战争的破坏性后果，作者有意选择词语，并按特定顺序排列，产生与主题相对应的低沉、刺耳、刺耳的效果。
